South America’s Business Gateway Is Shifting: How Entrepreneurs Can Position Themselves Early in Chile After the Economic Reform

On August 4, 2026, the Chilean Congress approved a major economic reform package featuring measures such as the gradual reduction of corporate income tax, incentives for investment, and improvements to the overall business environment. Chile’s Finance Minister stated that the reform signals the country’s intention to reopen greater space for investment, entrepreneurship, and economic growth.

In recent years, as businesses around the world seek new sources of market growth, Latin America has gradually emerged as an increasingly important destination for international investors. Among the region’s economies, Chile has long been regarded as one of South America’s more established investment destinations, supported by its relatively stable economic system, open trade policies, and mature business environment.

For entrepreneurs seeking to expand into the South American market, identifying local commercial opportunities is only one part of the equation. Another increasingly important consideration is how to enter Chile more flexibly and establish a sustainable framework for ongoing business activities.

Why Is Chile Attracting International Investors?

Chile is one of Latin America’s more open economies and is also a major global supplier of copper and lithium.

In recent years, the rapid development of electric vehicles, energy storage, and the global energy transition has drawn increasing international attention to Chile’s substantial strategic mineral resources.

In August 2026, Chile and Argentina further advanced a cross-border mining cooperation framework aimed at sharing infrastructure, improving the investment environment, and facilitating the development of additional mining projects. According to reports, the framework could potentially unlock more than USD 20 billion in investment opportunities.

At the same time, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru signed a strategic minerals cooperation declaration to strengthen collaboration in key minerals such as copper and lithium and enhance South America’s role in global energy-transition supply chains.

Together, these developments suggest that Chile is seeking to strengthen its appeal to international investors through industrial cooperation, investment-policy adjustments, and broader economic reforms.

Chile’s Multiple-Entry Business Visa as an Option for Overseas Business Expansion

As companies become increasingly international, more entrepreneurs are looking beyond overseas market opportunities and paying greater attention to establishing stable and flexible arrangements for cross-border business activities.

According to the official regulations of Chile’s National Migration Service, Chile’s temporary residence system includes residence categories related to commercial activities, including the Multiple-Entry Business Management category (Negocios de múltiple entrada).

This category is primarily intended for foreign nationals who need to enter Chile regularly for business activities, investment management, and other corporate-related matters.

Under Chile’s current business residence framework, applicants are generally required to demonstrate an appropriate business background and sufficient financial capacity. The principal applicant is typically required to show a monthly income starting from approximately USD 3,400.

Upon approval, an applicant may initially receive a Chilean temporary residence permit valid for up to two years and may continue to renew the permit subject to the applicable requirements. During the validity of the residence permit, the holder may stay in Chile for up to six months per year, making it suitable for individuals who need to maintain long-term involvement in the Chilean market without residing in the country throughout the entire year.

The residence category also allows eligible family members to accompany the principal applicant. A qualifying spouse, as well as unmarried and financially dependent children under the age of 24, may apply together. Subject to the applicable regulations, the spouse may also be permitted to work legally in Chile, providing families with greater flexibility when planning a longer-term presence in the country.

Compared with a one-time business visit, multiple-entry business residence may be particularly suitable for individuals who have ongoing commercial needs, including those who:

1. Need to travel to Chile regularly for business negotiations;

2. Participate in the management of local investment projects;

3. Conduct market research and business development activities;

4. Maintain long-term cooperation with Chilean companies.

Its core value lies not simply in facilitating a single business trip, but in providing entrepreneurs with a more stable residence arrangement for ongoing commercial activities.

From Business Visits to Long-Term Planning: Overseas Residence Is Becoming Part of Corporate Globalization

In the past, companies expanding overseas tended to focus primarily on markets, capital, and business partnerships. As the global commercial environment evolves, however, a growing number of entrepreneurs are also incorporating overseas residence planning into their international strategies in order to improve flexibility in cross-border operations and international living arrangements.

Chile’s multiple-entry business residence is not a traditional investment immigration program. Instead, it is a residence pathway based on genuine business needs and commercial activities.

According to information published by Chile’s National Migration Service, the temporary residence system is divided into a number of categories according to the applicant’s purpose, including business, employment, and family-related residence.

For applicants who already have plans for overseas business development, intend to enter the South American market, or need to travel frequently to Chile for work and commercial purposes, this type of residence arrangement may offer greater convenience and flexibility.

Chile: A South American Business Gateway Receiving Renewed Attention

From recent economic reforms and the development of the new-energy sector to expanding regional investment cooperation, Chile is once again drawing attention from international investors as a key South American market.

For entrepreneurs, overseas residence planning is not simply about obtaining a residence permit. More importantly, it can provide additional options for future business development, asset allocation, and international lifestyle planning.

As interest in the South American market continues to grow, Chile’s multiple-entry business residence is also becoming an option worth considering for certain entrepreneurs as part of a broader overseas expansion strategy.
