You never truly know if wealthy individuals from around the world will continue flocking to Singapore. As global demand rises, the window of opportunity to secure Permanent Residency (PR) might narrow significantly.

Hello everyone, welcome back as we continue our discussion on Singapore.
Recap: Why Ambitious Professionals Should Consider Singapore
In our previous episode, I provided an overview of Singapore’s landscape. I suggested that Singapore is an ideal destination for high-performing, driven talent seeking new growth opportunities, and it also offers an exceptional environment for high-net-worth individuals. Both groups should seriously evaluate Singapore as a strategic choice.
Today, let’s dive into Singapore’s immigration policies.
One fundamental point to keep in mind is that obtaining a work visa in Singapore remains relatively accessible.
Method 1: The Direct and Often Overlooked Approach – Online Job Applications
The first method is one that few people consider, yet it is remarkably straightforward: searching for job openings online in Singapore. It really is that simple.
In this regard, we can learn a great deal from Indian professionals. Professionals from India actively look for global career opportunities, secure work visas through direct applications, and subsequently transition to permanent residency. This is a common and proven pathway.
Given that Singapore is a multilingual society with a significant Chinese-speaking population, what is holding us back? If you possess genuine talent and professional expertise, you should directly browse job openings in Singapore online, conduct virtual interviews, and secure an employment offer. Because Singapore's work visa system operates on a structured quota basis, once you receive an employment contract, you can obtain an Employment Pass (EP), relocate to Singapore, and bring your spouse and children along.
Yet, very few people actually attempt this approach. Why? The primary obstacle is often a lack of confidence and overthinking. Because Singapore’s work visa process is relatively straightforward—arguably more accessible than in regions like Hong Kong—this pathway is entirely viable.
At Globevisa, our Singapore office is quite substantial, and many of our team members have migrated to Singapore from abroad through this exact method. For instance, our general manager in Singapore and several other colleagues relocated directly from overseas offices without any personal financial burden. Once hired by our Singapore entity, we sponsored their EP, allowing them to relocate seamlessly.
Since our company has the capability to issue EPs, many other enterprises in Singapore possess the same capacity. Why not submit your resume directly? In my view, this is a widely overlooked strategy. People tend to overthink and under-act.
Imagine securing employment in Singapore—solving your residency needs while earning a stable income. What could be better? You might think it sounds improbable, but have you actually tried it? I have met many individuals who never even gave it a chance. This is my first and highly recommended piece of advice.
Method 2: The Alternative Route – Establishing Your Own Business
The second approach is a well-known alternative route.
For instance, international students or young graduates looking to gain professional experience in Singapore's financial sector can apply for a 6-month internship visa—an option that many are unaware exists.
If finding a traditional job feels daunting or you lack confidence in the local job market, an alternative is to register your own company in Singapore and employ yourself. This functions under the standard Employment Pass (EP) framework. Singapore’s immigration system relies heavily on the "EP" (Employment Pass) designation.
By registering a company and hiring yourself, you establish a compliant pathway. As the business grows, you can subsequently employ colleagues, friends, or expand your team. This is a completely legitimate and compliant method.
There are also variations of this strategy. When registering a company, you can engage in wealth management activities. Singapore offers a highly favorable tax environment, alongside structures like Single Family Offices (SFOs). For high-net-worth individuals, allocating around SGD 5 million to establish a business entity allows you to self-sponsor your employment visa while generating commercial turnover and benefiting from Singapore’s competitive tax framework.
Alternatively, if you have capital of around SGD 20 million, you can establish a formal Single Family Office to manage your private assets. This simultaneously secures tax efficiencies and residency status. For investors with significant capital looking for wealth management solutions, options ranging from SGD 5 million to SGD 20 million provide viable pathways to residency.
High-Tier Employment Pass Categories
There are three advanced categories within Singapore's work visa framework. While they cater to high earners, it is worth noting them in case you qualify:
1. Personalized Employment Pass (PEP): Designed for high-income professionals with a monthly salary exceeding SGD 22,000. The PEP offers greater flexibility, granting a validity period of two to three years without requiring a visa reapplication when changing employers.
2. Tech Pass: Tailored specifically for leaders and experts in the technology sector.
3. ONE Pass (Overseas Networks and Expertise Pass): Available to individuals with a monthly salary of SGD 30,000 or more. This tier grants a direct 5-year work pass without tied employment restrictions, allowing families to relocate smoothly.
If your earning capacity is robust, options like the ONE Pass offer a streamlined 5-year validity. While obtaining Permanent Residency has become more competitive due to rising global demand, proactive measures—such as optimizing your tax contributions and securing higher-tier work passes—can strengthen your long-term standing before the applicant pool becomes even more congested.
True Investment Immigration: The Global Investor Programme (GIP)
Another significant option is Singapore's Global Investor Programme (GIP), which represents the country's official investment immigration pathway.
Why was the GIP previously less popular? In the past, obtaining PR via a standard Employment Pass was relatively straightforward. People preferred starting with an EP and transitioning to PR within a few years rather than navigating a complex investment program.
Today, however, given the heightened competitiveness of obtaining PR through standard employment, the GIP deserves serious consideration because it provides a direct pathway to permanent residency for the entire family.
While the GIP requires substantial financial commitment—typically tailored for high-net-worth individuals—it offers structured options:
● Investing at least SGD 10 million in a new or existing business venture;
● Investing at least SGD 25 million in approved GIP funds; or
● Establishing a Singapore-based single-family office with assets under management of at least SGD 200 million, aligned with government economic priorities.
If your enterprise is already expanding into Singapore or you intended to deploy significant capital into regional investments anyway, combining corporate expansion or fund allocation with the GIP framework allows you to secure PR status for your entire family efficiently.
A Key Reminder: Permanent Residency as a "Black Box"
Given current trends, it is essential to remember that the PR and citizenship evaluation process operates with strict annual quotas. The number of allocated slots remains capped, while the quality and competitiveness of applicant profiles continue to rise.
Looking ahead over the next 5 to 10 years, you must assess whether the qualification threshold for Singapore PR will increase or decrease. Similar to predicting real-estate trends, while certainty is impossible, a prudent outlook suggests that entry barriers will likely rise, making PR acquisition increasingly selective.
Therefore, taking proactive steps early—whether through the GIP program, optimizing salary and tax contributions, participating in community engagement, or actively integrating into local society—will significantly improve your long-term prospects for securing permanent residency and citizenship in Singapore.
This concludes our overview of Singapore’s immigration policies. Thank you for reading!
