FY2027 U.S. H-1B Lottery Ends: Without That “Card,” All Your Effort Becomes Just “Temporary Residency.”

The much-anticipated FY2027 H-1B lottery results for the U.S. have officially been released. Is it time for happy tears—or are you back among the “denominator” (i.e., the many who didn’t get selected)? In a 2026 year when immigration policy is changing fast, is relying purely on luck to win a work visa still the best move for staying in the U.S.?
1) FY2027 H-1B Lottery Overview
According to the latest official update from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on April 1, 2026, the first-round H-1B lottery for FY2027 has been concluded.

1. Policy updates
This year’s lottery continues the “one person, one registration” (Beneficiary-Centric) system introduced starting with FY2025: no matter how many companies register you, the system only runs one draw using unique identity information like your passport.
For FY2027, USCIS also fully rolls out “salary-based weighted selection.”
In other words, applicants in higher pay levels (Level 3 & Level 4) get a higher chance of being selected, while entry-level applicants (Level 1) face fiercer competition than ever.If you’re a programmer working in Silicon Valley or New York, Level 4 usually means an annual salary around $200,000. If you’re in a secondary city or another industry, it’s often closer to $120,000–$150,000.

USCIS’s salary-level model estimates selection odds
2. Key numbers and selection status
● Annual quota: Still the same—65,000 for the regular cap and 20,000 for the master’s degree and higher cap. The H-1B quota hasn’t changed.
● Registrations: USCIS hasn’t released detailed numbers yet, but demand from people worldwide who want to work in the U.S. remains strong. Even with new rules aimed at limiting abusive registrations, registrations still stay at very high levels.
● Selection status in your USCIS account:
Selected, Submitted (awaiting determination), Not Selected, or Denied (invalid)
2) If You’re Selected: The Next 90 Days Are Crucial
If you see the message you’ve been dreaming of—Selected—go easy on the celebration. Being selected only means you get the chance to file. It is not your final visa approval.
1. Filing window
Your selection notice will include a filing deadline for submitting documents (typically between April 1 and June 30, 2026). If your employer or attorney doesn’t file a complete I-129 petition within those 90 days, your opportunity will be lost.
2. Watch out for Department of Labor scrutiny
Because salary levels are so closely tied this year, USCIS will focus on whether the LCA (Labor Condition Application) matches your job duties and salary level.
If they consider your situation a “low salary, high pay claim” type issue, or if the role doesn’t qualify as a Specialty Occupation, your chances of getting an RFE (request for evidence) or even a denial will rise significantly after selection.
3. Effective date
Even if everything goes smoothly, your H-1B status won’t start until no earlier than October 1, 2026.
3) If You Didn’t Get Selected: Start PLAN B Now
If your status is Submitted (in the wait pool) or Not Selected, you should prepare before your OPT expires.
1. Look for “last-minute” opportunities
If USCIS ends up with fewer filings in the first round, there may be a second or even third lottery round in July or August. But given how high demand has been in 2026, that probability is shrinking year by year.
2. Further study and Day 1 CPT
Many students choose a second master’s program or PhD to keep F-1 status, and use Day 1 CPT to continue working for the same employer.
This can ease the immediate pressure, but the legal risk—especially around compliance questions in later H-1B approvals—should not be ignored.
4) A Deeper Reflection: H-1B Is Temporary—Green Card Is Permanent
After going through round after round of lottery anxiety, you may realize this: the H-1B is basically just a temporary work status that can expire at any time.
● Identity anxiety: H-1B is tied to an employer. If you lose your job, you typically only have 60 days to sort things out—no matter how much you make.
● Long queues: Even after you start the green card process with H-1B, for Chinese-born applicants, EB-2/EB-3 priority dates still mean a marathon.
● Policy uncertainty: With elections and tightening immigration policies, nonimmigrant visa rules have become less stable.
In 2026, having a green card is no longer just an “option.” It’s the essential path for building your future in the U.S.
With a green card, you can say goodbye to:
1. The annual springtime nightmare of lottery season
2. Identity crises during layoffs
3. Work-authorization limits when switching jobs, getting promoted, or starting a business
4. High tuition costs and major restrictions for kids in the U.S.
5) GlobalVisa (Globevisa) Endorsed “High Certainty” Results
Now that you see the situation clearly, what matters is execution. Getting a green card is a race against time—and the guide you choose can decide the outcome.
