Cambodia Retirement Visa: Long-Term Living with No Language Test or Minimum Stay Requirement

The ideal retirement is not about staying rooted in one place and following a fixed routine. It is about having the freedom to choose how you want to live—without the pressure to keep up or stay constantly busy, while still maintaining your life and social circle in China and enjoying a warm, relaxed lifestyle overseas.

With no language test, no major investment requirement and no strict minimum-stay rules, Cambodia is emerging as an attractive long-stay destination for retirees aged 55 and above. A Cambodia Retirement Visa (ER) can open the door to an affordable and relaxed retirement lifestyle in Southeast Asia.

So what makes this familiar yet still relatively under-the-radar Southeast Asian country suitable for retirement? Who is the Cambodia Retirement Visa designed for, and how does the application work?

Cambodia: A New Retirement Option in Southeast Asia

First, let us look at the official figures.

According to Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism, the country received approximately 5.57 million international visitors in 2025, including more than 1.2 million visitors from China, representing a year-on-year increase of 41.5%. China has become one of Cambodia’s most important source markets.

More importantly, the direction of development is also worth noting.

In May 2026, Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism officially released its 2025 tourism indicators and 2026 tourism forecast. Despite a decline in total international visitor arrivals in 2025, international tourism revenue increased by 6.6% year on year to US$3.878 billion, indicating that higher-spending visitors are becoming an increasingly important part of the market.

At the same time, Cambodia has continued to improve the quality of its tourism sector and develop long-stay and “second-home” tourism models to attract overseas visitors who stay longer and have stronger spending power.

For retirees with a stable source of income who wish to spend extended periods overseas, Cambodia also offers a dedicated ER retirement residence pathway.

In practical terms, Cambodia is evolving from a destination primarily associated with short-term tourism into one that is increasingly suitable for longer-term living.

A Familiar Corner of Southeast Asia

For Chinese nationals, Cambodia is one of the Southeast Asian countries that can feel particularly familiar. Chinese cultural influence is deeply rooted, Chinese communities have a strong presence in the local economy, and the environment is relatively easy for new Chinese residents to adapt to.

In Phnom Penh, Chinese supermarkets, Shaxian restaurants, Haidilao, Lanzhou noodle shops and restaurants serving regional Chinese cuisines are widely available. WeChat Pay and Alipay are accepted in many Chinese commercial districts, while Chinese-speaking local staff or interpreters can often be found when assistance is needed with government procedures.

Healthcare provides another layer of reassurance. Phnom Penh and other major cities have a considerable number of private medical institutions, and some hospitals and clinics are able to provide Chinese-language services or assistance. For middle-aged and older retirees, this kind of practical convenience can often matter more than scenery alone.

Cambodia also benefits from its proximity to China. Direct flights are frequent, with an average flight time of around three hours, while the time difference is only one hour. This makes family visits and travel back to China relatively convenient.

Chinese pension payments can continue to be received while living in Cambodia, while the country also offers a relatively low cost of living and a warm, comfortable climate.

For retirees, the real considerations are not simply whether a destination is beautiful. Daily convenience, ease of communication, access to healthcare and the ability for family members to visit all matter.

Cambodia is geographically close to China, has only a one-hour time difference and offers relatively convenient travel connections. For retirees who want to maintain their existing life in China while adding another option for living overseas, this combination of proximity and everyday convenience gives Cambodia a distinctive advantage over many other destinations.

A Low-Commitment Overseas Retirement Plan

The Cambodia Retirement Visa (ER) is a long-term extension of stay established under the relevant provisions of Cambodia’s Immigration Law and designed for retired foreign nationals who do not rely on local employment.

Its appeal comes down to three core advantages:

Low entry threshold: No mandatory language test, no complicated educational requirements and no major compulsory investment. Applicants generally need to be aged 55 or above and provide evidence of retirement status and stable financial means. There is no language examination or minimum-stay requirement.

No minimum-stay requirement: There is no official minimum number of days that applicants must spend in Cambodia each year. Both the 6-month and 12-month visas allow multiple entries, giving retirees the flexibility to stay or travel according to their own schedule.

Renewable indefinitely: As long as the applicant continues to meet the financial requirements and has no record of legal violations, the visa can be renewed year after year by paying the applicable renewal fee, providing a practical pathway for long-term residence.

Straightforward Application Requirements

The core requirements fall into four main categories:

Age:

Applicants must be 55 years old or above.

Retirement Declaration:

Applicants must confirm that they are retired and are no longer engaged in any form of employment.

Financial Requirement — Choose One of Two Options:

●  Applicants may provide either:Stable passive income of approximately US$1,500 per month (around RMB 10,800), which may include pension income, rental income, dividends and other qualifying passive income; or

Required Documents:

A passport valid for more than six months, a white-background passport photo, a police clearance certificate, a health certificate and proof of a fixed residential address in Cambodia. If a spouse is accompanying the main applicant, a marriage certificate must also be provided.

In terms of procedure, the applicant first enters Cambodia on an Ordinary (E-class) Visa and then applies in-country with the immigration authorities for the ER retirement extension, or Cambodia Retirement Visa.
