Before UTMB: No Complaints, Just the Journey

Hello everyone. I am currently in Chamonix, France, standing at the base of Mont Blanc. In about four hours, I will begin the UTMB (Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc).

The Challenge and the Preparation

The UTMB is a 174-kilometer race featuring a cumulative elevation gain of 10,000 meters. Participating in this event has been a long-standing goal of mine. The path to this starting line began roughly a year ago when two friends and I made a mutual commitment to take on this challenge together. Over the past twelve months, we have trained rigorously, consistently pushing our physical limits to prepare for this exact day.

Facing the Reality of Race Day

As the start time approaches, I must admit that I am not entirely confident I will finish. The course is inherently difficult, but the current weather conditions have severely complicated the situation. We experienced heavy rain throughout the morning, and the organizers have already postponed the start time by two hours due to severe storms and heavy snow at higher elevations.

Focusing on the Process

Faced with this unpredictable weather, I am consciously reminding myself of why I am here. I have already benefited from and enjoyed the past year of disciplined training. Regardless of what happens on the mountain today, my primary objective is to appreciate the journey itself. My mindset is simple: take in the scenery, accept the conditions, and proceed with zero complaints.

Reflections on Chamonix

If you have never visited Chamonix, it is a remarkable place. It has quickly become one of my favorite locations due to its fantastic, outdoor-oriented atmosphere. The vibe here has actually shifted my perspective on French culture. In Hong Kong, the French expatriate community I interact with is primarily corporate, but here in Chamonix, you encounter a highly energetic, athletic demographic that is entirely focused on the mountains.

Good luck to me today, and thank you for reading.
