Since July 1, 2012, the day when the Business Innovation and Investment (Provisional) visa (subclass 188) was launched, six and a half years have passed. 2018 was once predicted to be the year of policy change. However, the Australian immigration department did not make any adjustment on its immigration policies. When most people believed that there would not be any change taking place in Australian immigration policies, on December 18, 2018, NSW suddenly announced that applications for 188 Visa and 132 Visa in NSW would be completely shut down. In other words, now, Victoria and Queensland are the final choice for immigration through 188 Visa application.

Immigration Quota Decreased

In this October, Gladys Berejiklian, the Premier of NSW, said that the immigration quota of NSW was expected to be decreased by 50%.

According to Berejiklian, this decision was made under full consideration. The number of immigrants has increased from 45,000 to 100,000 in the past ten years, and the development of infrastructure could not keep up with the growth of immigrants. Therefore, in order to guarantee sustainable development of NSW, the pace of immigration should be slowed down.

Unsurprisingly, two months later, NSW suddenly declared the cessation of applications for 188 Visa and 132 Visa. The reason for shutting down these programs in NSW is that there is no immigration quota left for NSW. Such sudden cessation, which took place in the middle of a fiscal year, has never happened in the past. No one knows when these immigration programs will be open again or even whether they will be open again. It is possible that such situation occurs in other provinces.
