Suspension of the MCBI program will be extended until Sep. 2020

The Republic of Moldova is a modern European country with picturesque landscapes and a world-renowned wine industry. Its geographic position allows easy and convenient access to Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The Moldova Citizenship-by-Investment (MCBI) program is the first program of its kind to offer this unique combination of visa-free travel destinations. Moldova passport holders can enjoy visa free travel to 122 countries and regions, including the Schengen area, Turkey and Russia.

The MCBI program requires applicants to make a clear economic contribution to the country through the Public Sustainable Development Fund of Moldova (Public Investment Fund). Applicants need to undergo a comprehensive and thorough background check (Moldova has implemented a four-tier due diligence system, which is considered the most thorough in the world) to obtain citizenship.

This program was launched in November 2018 and was developed by the Government of the Republic of Moldova in cooperation with its service provider and the Moldovan Investment Company. Moldova wants to use the foreign direct investment generated by the MCBI program to advance its progress in all sectors and ensure the sustainable development of the country. Up to now, 36 applications have been received, these applications are currently under review and are expected to be approved successively to grant them citizenship.

After the 2019 election, changes in the government and political environment raised concerns about this program, which led the Moldova's government announced in July 2019 that it would suspend acceptance of its applications for four months. At the same time, the authorities represented that applications submitted before July will be processed normally.

Subsequently, the Government of Moldova stated in December 2019 that the suspension of the MCBI program, which was originally scheduled to end this month, will be extended for another two months until February 20, 2020. However, at the end of February 2020, the Moldova Government announced the third extension, saying that all new applications of MCBI program will not be accepted until September 2020.

This is the third extension of the moratorium of Moldova MCBI program. The fate of this program has been changing since its implementation, and it remains uncertain whether it will reopen or close in the future. Although the Moldova MCBI program has not yet been reopened, Globevisa can provide you with other alternative programs that can obtain the citizenship of potential European countries such as Turkey and Montenegro through investment, which both are similar to Moldova MCBI program in terms of benefits.
