Australian Government Officially Launches NIV Visa Applications
On December 7, 2024, the Australian Government Officially Announced the Application Requirements for the National Innovation Visa (NIV).
In May 2024, the Australian Government announced the closure of the 188 Business Innovation and Investment Visa and revealed plans to introduce the National Innovation Visa (NIV) by the end of the year. Staying true to its word, the Australian Government released the detailed framework for the NIV on December 7, 2024! The implementation of the NIV signifies the official end of the Global Talent Independent (GTI) program.
From December 6, 2024, the GTI program ceased accepting new applications. Starting from December 7, applicants can submit applications for the NIV.
The NIV is designed to attract outstanding global talent to Australia. Falling under the 858 visa category, it provides a direct pathway to permanent residency in Australia. The visa is divided into four main categories: Global Researchers, Entrepreneurs, Innovative Investors, and talents such as athletes or inventors who can significantly contribute to Australia.
Applications for the NIV are now open, following a straightforward process:
Submit EOI → Receive Invitation → Apply for 858 NIV Visa → Medical Examination/Police Clearance → Pre-approval → Obtain Australian PR
It is important to note that, similar to the GTI program, the NIV requires applicants to be nominated by an individual or organization recognized for their outstanding achievements in the applicant’s field.
Who Can Nominate You?
- Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens
- Australian organizations (e.g., industry associations, academic institutions)
Priority Review Categories for NIV Applications:
- First Priority: Exceptionally elite applicants in their fields, such as Nobel Prize or Olympic medal winners.
- Second Priority: Applicants nominated by top federal or state government institutions in Australia. These include outstanding athletes or inventors who can bring international influence to Australia, applicants with a history of successful innovative ventures, entrepreneurs contributing to Australia’s innovation sectors, or individuals holding international patents.
- Third Priority: Applicants with exceptional achievements in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, advanced robotics, cybersecurity, health industries, or recycling and low-emission technologies.
- Fourth Priority: Applicants excelling in areas such as agritech/agricultural food, defense and space, education, financial services/fintech, infrastructure and transportation, or resource sectors (e.g., skills in Industry 4.0 automation).
The NIV has no age or English language requirements. However, applicants under 18 or over 55 must demonstrate that they can make a significant contribution to Australia to be eligible. Significant contributions include:
- Substantial economic benefits to Australia
- Creating more employment opportunities for Australian residents
- Contributions to research or innovation in Australia
- Bringing international influence to Australia in various fields
Additionally, there are restrictions for applicants holding 491 or 494 Regional Employer-Sponsored Visas. They must have held their visas for at least three years before applying for the NIV. No other restrictions apply.
The most notable aspect of the NIV is its dedicated pathway for entrepreneurs and investors.
In summary:
Entrepreneurs who can bring innovative products or services to Australia and investors with a history of successful innovative ventures, particularly those who have created jobs or can do so in the future, are encouraged to apply.
Both the NIV and GTI share the same goal of attracting top-tier talent to Australia. Compared to the GTI, the NIV provides a clearer prioritization framework and explicitly outlines pathways for investors and entrepreneurs. The program gives preference to individuals with international achievements and talents in Australia’s high-demand industries. If you are a leader in your field, the NIV is an excellent opportunity for you!
